The SA20 League, South Africa’s premier T20 cricket tournament, is set to captivate fans once again with its third season, running from January 9 to February 8, 2025.
Foundation
Cricket South Africa (CSA) had tried earlier to set up franchise based T20 leagues with the Global T20 League in 2017 and the Mzansi Super League in 2018.
However, both tournaments faced hurdles and didn’t last long. Learning from these experiences, CSA teamed up with broadcaster SuperSport and former IPL Chief Operating Officer Sundar Raman to launch the SA20 league in 2022.
This new effort was designed to build a strong and globally popular T20 competition. The first SA20 League began in January 2023, with six teams representing major South African cities: Cape Town, Durban, Johannesburg, Pretoria, Gqebera, and Paarl.
Interestingly, all the teams were bought by IPL franchise owners, adding significant funding and experience to the league.
